Pochard
(Aythya ferina).
A male Pochard with Mallards and a Black-headed Gull.
The Pochard was first recorded as a breeding-bird in the mid 1990s on Eskilsø, where it has since continued to breed, irregularly, and with no more than 5 pairs. In 2012 one pair bred on Skovholmene. The October population is increasing, with a maximum of just under 1200 individuals. The January population varies a good deal, with a maximum of just over 500.
Pochards are often to be seen with Tufted Ducks, keeping to the outer edge of the flock. There is a good chance of seeing them in the harbours in winter.
