Common Scurvy-grass
(Cochlearia officinalis).
Flowering scurvy-grass.
Scurvy-grass is a typical plant of the lowest part of the beach zone. It is found on almost all of the islands, but is only dominant on Øksneholm. It has fresh leaves all year round. There are only a few animals that care for its very bitter taste, but it helps to keep rats and other animals alive in winter.
Scurvy-grass is green all winter – rats make the most of this.
Scurvy-grass is extremely rich in vitamin C. It is found on almost all coasts around the world and was formerly used by sailors as a remedy for scurvy, which is caused by vitamin C deficiency. A good captain gave his crew scurvy-grass whenever possible.
